I GIVE A GOAT LEMONGO 2023/2024

SDG1 – End poverty in all its forms everywhere

SDG2 – End hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture

SDG5 – Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

Specific objective: Limit malnutrition and support the empowerment of women in the Lemongo community within 1 year.

Purpose: Entrust 10 goats to a group of 10 women and start an animal microcredit

Activities to be implemented: Identification of the first 20 beneficiaries; purchase of goats; distribution of goats to the first 10 beneficiaries; follow-up of beneficiaries; donation of lambs to the following 10 beneficiaries.

Location: Kenya, Kajiado County, Lemongo.

Duration: 2023/2024

Partners: Daniel Mpaayo

Project status: IN PROGRESS

Context : Following a drought of 2 consecutive years, the herd of goats decreased drastically in the Maasai communities of Amboséli. In the community of Lemongo, some single women do not have a goat and struggle to feed their children. Today the long-awaited rain is coming and brings with it the hope of seeing food for the livestock again (grass and brush). Following the field visit at the end of March 2023 by GHA, the project started on April 1, 2023 in the community of Lemongo.

This animal micro-credit project aims to: to allow very vulnerable families to own a goat which will provide milk for family food and which will make it possible to start building up a small herd. The number of future beneficiaries within a community or village is defined according to strict criteria. (Widow, single-parent family, dependent grandparents, disabled person, etc.) A little training and follow-up are provided by Daniel Mpaayo. Each person receiving a goat will give the first female lamb of this goat to another family in difficulty, after having kept it for 7 months in order to benefit from the mother’s milk. If the lamb is a male it will be sold and replaced by a female, if the goat is killed by a predator or if it is sterile, it will be replaced. The last group of lambs will make it possible to extend this project to another community or another village.
